I'm not really surprised by the way that took my last poll. It just confirms that it is impossible here to have a constructive discussion on matters that should interest everybody. I note that a majority of users are happy to play in the battle field which is the contribution forum, since I persist to consider rules are the cause of that.

I think I used a non provocating tone in the statement I made. I regret that some posters used very agressive words to answer me, but I forgive them, even if they didn't apologize.

The fact that Ken locked this thread proves that he read it. I'm sure his decisions will be the good ones.

Threads about 'civility' rarely, if ever, remain civil.  It is an odd forum fact.

My problem here, is that someone posts something entirely consolatory with pure good intentions, and this first sentence (AND second) in response is to call him a whiner - a name he has worked hard to associate with surfur in as-negative-a-way as possible, such that it means more than simply the word itself (much like Attractive and Successful African American, a perfectly reasonably word in its own right, was used specifically to instill negative feelings, and now the word means more than it did). Hardly civil.

If all he did was ask a question, okay, but he didn't.

I will confess that I _AM_ out to get him at this point, because I think that his behaviour is totally unacceptable. He repeatedly belittles new posters because they asked something that was not new, constantly calls people stupid and idiots, makes disgusting comparisons of people - I've even seen him (repeatedly) use someone illness as a weapon against them whenever they simply appear.

How would you feel if someone compared you to a turd? If you then said that you didn't appreciate the joke and his response was 'then you must be a idiot' is that still okay?

I originally thought that it was a misunderstanding, that Skip was simply  not putting himself across very well and that it could all be resolved with some well placed conversations and a bit of consideration. Several others told me that Skip knew exactly how he was coming across and openly admitted to enjoying the way he made some people feel and that his actions were meant to offend. I refused to believe them without giving him a chance. I gave him several, and he openly admitted to me exactly what others have told me. I've told him privately that something he said particularly offended me (and I recognized that it was unintentional), and his response was to justify it as a bit of a laugh - a considerate person would have said 'I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend.'

Lots of people have run out of patients with him, and so many respond with a short fuse. There is NO WAY that I would have made the post in the other thread if that had been a first (or second, or third...) offense. I don't mind if someone mistakenly causes offense with a joke, so long as they can apologize for any offense caused. I don't ever recall seeing Skip apologize for something he said, but I have seen him pile on more when someone (civilly) complains.

See these threads for an idea of popular opinion. I believe (and several have commented to me) that Skip is one of those the thread refers to.

I go away for a couple of years (dropping in rarely) and I come back to see nothing has changed.

I am totally appalled by the thread (see link at top) that I read.  It was disgusting.

Skip, you should be ashamed of yourself.  I know you're a bigot, I've experienced that first hand...but, surely a forum about DVDs is not the place for it.

You're rudeness, newbie-snacks and generally grumpiness I can accept as part of your general 'Skip-ness'...and, at times, have even considered it endearing.

Question: Don't you get tired of people having a go at you? Aren't you sick of all the aggravation?  Shouldn't coming in here be much more fun?

If, as I suspect, your answer to these questions is NO, then there is no hope for you.

If however (I hope) you answered YES, them maybe you should keep a few of your opinions to yourself - thereby removing the huge target hanging around your neck.

Stick to DVDs. Stick to Profiler and I think you'll be a happier man; and the forum will be a happier place.




For all those newbies who don't know me - I am NOT attacking Skip. Just trying to point out some flaws. He can be a good man. He can be helpful and considerate. He can even, on occassion, display support and compassion.  I used to be a regular in the forums until the level of abuse went through the roof.

Here's some advice to all those who hate the forum and its bullies - DON'T COME IN HERE! Do what I do, buy your DVDs, watch them and do good contributions that follow the rules (yes, even the rules you don't agree with).

Out of curiosity, Skip...what bigoted remark did surfeur51 make to you that warranted such a harsh response?
