And there are users, who don't. That's the prerequiste for this thread

Time to say goodbye

Once upon a time I left this forum, because of the useless quarrelling promoted by Skip and some fellows who could never give in into anything.

This year I got mad about users around here three times. While the first two issues I got emotional about, were caused by users who simply did not know the rules and insisted on their right of being dumb, the last one really made me doubt, if this community is the place, where I should invest thousands of hours of work.

The answer is no. It does not seem to be worth working for a community, who does not deserve this name.

No one around here seems to be offended by a user, who does not only claim to be omniscient but also takes the right to correct aother man's common name thread, completely denying the will of the community and completely ignoring any etiquette. But I am, and I care about who I communicate with...

Bye.

ps.
If anyone is willing to carry on any of my projects, let me know by PM - surely I will be lurking around on a less regular basis, since quitting to work for the forum does not mean to quit collecting. All my work is based on Excel Sheets, therefore the one should be able to handle Excle tables. In detail there are
- List of common name threads (for what it's worth, when there are users defining different common names for one person)
- my common name finding posts
- my BY posts
- the work on headshots...

Once again, no amount of arguing will change the bottom line that this is simply not allowed by the contribution rules. I'm going to stick by those rules, and yes, if that means that a common name-finding thread needs an accurate count at some point, then I'll happily provide that - not just for my own benefit, but for that of anyone else who wants to follow the rules.

You can repeat it as long and as loud as you want - and do: It will not override the fact that the community voted to interpret exact this rule in a another way than you.

As long as you are not Ken, nor an Invelos executive nor God, you are simply wrong.

Continuing to insist on your interpretion of this rule is stubborn and way beyond your level, at least the level I thought you were acting on.

The most recent discussion about this was in this thread, in which everyone, *even you*, agreed that these should not be listed. That's the majority you're looking for.

A thread with 15 posts (including mine pointing to the contradicting votes, seems not to be sufficient to outdate two polls of 20+ users each. At least not in my universe.

... I'll just stick to the rules, ...

You try to push through your interpretion of the rules against the already documented will of the majority.

... and you highjack this common name thread to do this...

This is your opinion.

No, those are the rules.

This is your (personal) interpretion of this rule. Repeating it endlessly did not convice the majority voting against it. ... and still does not.

This is your opinion. And, unless you can find a majority around here forllowing this interpretion, it is useless. You cannot ignore the expressed opinion of the majority; they expressed it twice!

INVALID
- Constantine (confirmed by Kluge)
- Invictus (confirmed by Kluge)
- The Sunset Limited (confirmed by T!M)
- Watchmen (confirmed by Kluge)

As cited above, these entries were judged valid by the community!

Since this is - or at least should be - a community effort, the common name is not defined by the one who declares himself as "the majority" and repeats his view of the rules most often.

@Mad Rockatansky: Could you please be so kind and copy in the correct count again. - Thank you.

I'm still not clear how I submit non-US releases because I don't see locality in the contribution data.  I encountered another one I was unable to submit, also a music DVD:

Evanescence: From Fallen to Broken (4723654825541)

OK, I think I understand the problem...
a) When adding a new profile to your local database you can combine an European EAN number (13 digits) with the locality US. But when you try to contribute such a profile, then the contribution fails the check for this anomaly and the system refuses the contribution.

b) You don't know how the locality can be set, because it is not included in the edit profile dialog...
There are two dialogs, where the locality can be set. The first option was already pointed out in the preceding post: When a new profile is added to the local database, you can alter the locality before the profile will be added. The second option - when the profile already exists in the database - is hidden in the menus:

And indeed, a couple of posts up you wrote: "Agreed. Masses of employes without job description do not qualify for listing." Those were wise words, and you were absolutely right.

... my personal opinion and I stick with it. But the rejected trial to clarify the rules in that direction can't be ignored...

I won't add them to a profile personally, but as I judge them as valid, I refuse the removal and count them for common name threads.

Since this thread was used to justify the removal of (still) valid entries, I'd like to reference the according polls...

There was a thread in the rules forum with the intention to invalidate these entries, but the response was negative:

This was affirmed in in this forum: A valid poll allows this type of credit. Back then all information including the remarkable wording "Individual credits" was available; nothing relevant changed.

Although I voted No back then, per the rules any individual credits are still valid!

I got one approved on 19th. But on the same day I got:

... and nothing happened since then...

Which is rather annoying since this is a simple common name correction, which was blocked for a month now by rather stubborn no-voter, who completely ignorines the rules...

... maybe holiday season...

Sorry, I never stated that these media should get UK locality! I'm well aware, that the production has little to do with the destination locality...

The only thing I wanted to point out was, that the rather distinct statement

As jurgen42u pointed out, EANs starting with 50 or 73 are also used Dutch and Belgian releases, but much more localities: also UK, Germany, France, and other European countries. That list on Wikipedia doesn't seem to correspond with reality at all.

The EAN/GTIN coding is not arbitrary. The codes starting with 50xxx are assigned by the UK branch of GS1 for UK companies. There is no other way to get a (valid) 50xxx EAN than the GS1.

This means a product using a 50xxx EAN was "designed" by an UK company. It does not say much about, if it was produced in the UK or for which markets (our localities) the product was produced.

Concerning BD/DVD/...: there are often international releases, which are produced in one country (musical and show media often in UK) and get only a shrink wrap with the local rating or marketing titles... since BeNeLux has less synchronized titles you see more international releases there...

This backcover is a German release: it contains the German FSK-12 Sticker.

This is the reason, why I did not insist in 50 is UK. Sometimes like here, there is only one UPC - and only one company producing a disc - but many covers using the same UPC/EAN for many locations. This is why the locality is NOT checked for the UPC being valid for the specific locality...
