Well, I have had some disc suffer from rot, where they lock up and dont play correctly.

This list is growing sadly currently affecting these titles:

GitS : Innocences
GitS : Solid State Society
Star Wars : A New Hope
Star Wars : Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars : Return of the Jedi

These disc have been cared for and handled very little, no scratches etc but they no longer play.

So I went looking for Innocence and the US releases are out of print and if you can find it, it is listed for over $100.

I posted up on Blu-Ray.com and someone pointed out the UK release has no region set, and it will work in my equipment.

So $15 later I have a package from the UK in 10 days.

Played the disc last night and it worked great, no issues. One down side is that the interviews are PAL and would not play properly but that honestly doesn't bother me.

The Star Wars I have a few other options, but I am not going to rebuy the DVD's and I am not sold on the soon to be released BR Complete collection.

Just thought I would throw that out that if you can't find something for your locality there maybe some other options.

If you are going digital (media center, etc), you could rent the titles then rip to the media player hard drive.  I believe this is legal as long as you own the original.

Like our music collection, we rip to the hard drive and then use DVD Profiler to know which hard drive to load into the media center.  It's a lot easier to find the title we want to watch and if the disc goes bad, we would never know it.

There's also a small chance this will work with the current discs, even if they won't play at the DVD Player.

I've had "ghost in the shell" in my wish list for years since I first watched a friend's copy..

After reading this post, I'm thinking of ordering the UK Blu ray version of Ghost in the shell 2: Innocence..

I have a couple of questions since you guys own this copies..

@ Robagd, since I don't know in which country you reside, when you say "my equipment" do you mean Region 1 USA Blu-ray players?

I'm reading that the Blu-ray version "Ghost in the shell 2.0" was re-done, is it as good as the original and worth having or should I just pick up and stick with the original DVD release instead?

Personally I wasn't a fan of the "2.0" reversion - IMO the new SFX were distracting and out of place to the rest of the film, IMO. The new opening is the most extreme in this department, and being a slightly less so further in.
YMMV, of course.
I had the2.0 Blu and ditched it in favor of the original - which sadly a proper Blu is still only available as an import from Japan... $100+USD now, depending on the exchange rate.  The original cut on the curent 2.0 Blu as a bonus feature is actually just an upscale of analog composite source (probably betacam) and actually looks worse than the 1998 DVD!!  (the "Special Edition" DVD is also slightly problematic too as the video is overcompressed a bit to accommodate too many audio variants, resulting is some video artifacts.)

Thanks for the info, that's exactly what I feared about the GITS 2.0 version and the added CGI, I've been reading more reviews of that disc over at amazon, and since the BLu is less than 10.00 usd  probably pick up both version to see the differences for myself. I want the original dvd (with better transfer) before it disappears, and I want to re-watch this version first.

Fven if I was willing to pay that much for the Japanese BR,  the reviews are not great either(over  @ hidef-digest)and the audio is only DD 2.0. it's a shame that the original version of this important film still is not available in a proper Hi-def transfer.

PS: this forum always crashes after posting for me, good thing I remember to 'copy' first

Hello, Yep I am R1 A the USA and I have standard US equipment.

My 2 of my 3 DVD's are rotted (GitS Innocence and GitS Solid State Society ) So i now have both on BR.

I will say that the 2.0 was a little different with the new effects and CGI, it looks like they were trying to blend it into the #2 and #3 movies style.

2.0 looked good to me ( my TV is a older 55" Rear DLP not LED ), In all honesty I prefer the original DVD version but there is nothing horrendously wrong with the 2.0 version.

Wanna see some fun talk about the GitS movies take a poke over to bluray.com

I still haven't dropped the $30 on SSS yet...

Thanks, i will then order the UK blu disk of GITS 2.0 :innocence with confidence. I've never seen it.

And I'm also still using my old trusted 57" CRT based 1080i display...no urge to replace it until it dies.
