I have just seen this program and am quite impressed with its options , it seems much better than the one i use (collectorz.com) The question i have though is , is it possible to import my database from collectorz into dvd profiler??? as i really dont want to re-type in 1,000,s of entries again , allso what would be a decent bar code reader to use with profiler and my pc??

any help much appreciated

If you can get a list of all UPC's in your collection, this topic can help you.

I have no experience with barcode readers, so can't help you there.

Instructions on how to import a Collectorz XML file can be found here.

It involves using a plug-in called BulkEdit.

The same thread contains more information on how to migrate to DVDP.

EDIT: Welcome to the Asylum, by the way!

Hello and I also extend a welcome. The suggestions about using BulkEdit probably put you ina  bit of a catch-22, since the use of plugins will be disabled after 50 DVDs unless you puchase an unlimited license. Here are a couple of options:

(1) Export a sample of your collection to get confidence that BulkEdit will work for you. If you like the result, go ahead and buy the DVDP license and complete the work.
(2) Take a chance and go ahead and get the license right away. I, for one, as the author of BulkEdit promise to work with you until the job is done. You can bypass the Forums and PM me directly, and I will also give you my email address. I'm confident that we can be successful. And there are a couple of XML gurus around here that have our backs if we do hit a snag.

In any case, we are here to help you.

Another couple of thoughts: the main reason that I added this feature to BulkEdit was to give the opportunity to get a more complete conversion than simply importing the UPC/EAN:

(1) DVDP uses the concept of a "Locality" which is appended to UPC/EAN to form a "Profile ID". BulkEdit makes an intelligent guess about the locality to increase the accuracy of profile matches in the online database.
(2) BulkEdit attempts to capture personal data such as reviews, notes, purchase price, purchase place, box sets, etc. and put that data into the equivalent DVDP fields

If you decide to try this, I will fix any issues of misplaced or missed data, or incorrrect conversion. So long as you keep a copy of your orginal database, there is no penalty for re-running the conversion from scratch after bugs are fixed. It is pretty much a "set it and forget it" operation and will take probably a couple of hours for 1000 profiles. So, again, try a few profiles and see where we go from there ...

Thanks to both of you, but I will never forget the scenario where I got them. It was the DVD Spot project, and as I recall, I was merely the catalyst for what turned out to be a group collaborative effort, where I got lots of help figuring out the right approach. It was fun.

Meanwhile, I'll send you my email address by PM. If you want to send me a representative sample, or all, of a recent CZ export, I can take a look and see if anything has changed since I wrote the conversion. Not intending to violate your privacy, so if you prefer not to do that, I understand.

Ok, I got your XML and I see there will be some fixup required on my part.

Meanwhile, if it is your intention to ultimately put your data into DVDP, I see no advantage to continue to update the CZ database. Draw a line in the sand, create the XML export in anticipation of the conversion, and then put the extra time into putting DVDs into DVDP. It is very easy to consolidate and combine profiles into a single database. We will walk you through it. This way, you will avoid duplicate work and also gain some experience in using DVDP. (deleted obsolete advice) Edit: OMG you are fast - yaaay you got the licenses!!!!
