| Posted: | | | | bob9000 already posted this news in the HD DVD and Blu-ray thread, but since I imagine a lot of people stay as far away from it as possible, I thought I'd re-post this in its own thread: Quote: In what's becoming an all-too-familiar refrain, consumers have discovered an apparent manufacturing glitch in some Blu-ray copies of Warner's newly-released 'Blade Runner' Collection.
As we've previously reported, Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic hit both high-def formats earlier this week in two landmark five-disc collections containing five cuts of the film, including the first-ever home video release of the film's fabled "workprint."
Unfortunately, some Blu-ray fans popping in the set's fifth disc (which is meant to contain the workprint) are instead finding a mislabeled duplicate of the first disc, containing the film's final cut.
Warner has yet to comment on the 'Blade Runner' snafu, but coming only a week after some Blu-ray editions of its 'Harry Potter: Years 1-5' giftset were found to include HD DVD editions of 'Goblet of Fire,' the studio would seem to have some explaining to do. This is for the 5-disc edition, so I assume it may also impact the briefcase edition as well, since it contains the 5-disc edition case. So far I have not seen it reported that this glitch impacts the DVD or HD DVD versions of this release, so if you were planning on getting either of those you're probably safe. Sucks that Warner is having these kinds of problems. Last week is was HD DVD versions of Harry Potter showing up in the Blu-ray box sets. It's this type of thing that is probably pushing them to choose one side over the other. And I can imagine this is exactly why we're not seeing other Studios go Purple. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

Considering HD DVDs and DVDs are pressed at different locations, it seems unlikely that you'd run into the same issues. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. I would imagine that HD DVD and Blu-ray's are pressed at different locations as well, but they seem to keep mixing them up. It seems it's more of a packaging issue. Like everything is actually pressed at different factories, but then they all get shipped to a common location for the final packaging and that's where the mix up happens. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams | | | Last edited: by Vega |

This would explain the Harry Potter issue but not the Blade Runner issue. With BR the discs are actually labeled incorrectly, as opposed to it being a simple packaging issue where two identical discs ended up in the same package. What's happening is the fifth disc is labeled workprint, but contains the final cut. KM | | | Tags, tags, bo bags, banana fana fo fags, mi my mo mags, TAGS! Dolly's not alone. If I do and pop in disc 5, is there a way to quickly check it is the right version? | | | Schultzy - http://www.michaelschultz.net grenactics - The art of skillfully fraggin one’s opponent with the use of grenades or other compact explosive devices that are thrown by hand or projected. |

| Posted: | | | | From what I read, the real disc 5 has no Dolby TrueHD track, but the wrongly labelled version does. So if you find one of those you've got a dud unfortunately. I ordered Harry Potter AND Blade Runner on BD, haven't got the heart to check them. |

From this post in another forum you can also tell by the chapter count: Quote: DISC 5 (supposed to be workprint version of film) is actually an exact copy of DISC 1 (final cut) even though the DISC 5 artwork is different.
You can easily tell by checking the sound options. If your DISC 5 offers Dolby True HD and Dolby Digital, then you have a bad disc. Also, the chapter numbers would be 36 (final cut) as opposed to 35 (workprint). Quote: I ordered Harry Potter AND Blade Runner on BD, haven't got the heart to check them. | Posted: | | | | I don't have Blade Runner yet, but I can't believe that the menu wouldn't give some indication of which disc it should be regardless of what's printed on the disc. I have no real idea, but I think it would be rather unusual for it to not be marked somehow.
Of course disc 1 also has 3 commentaries I believe which wouldn't be on disc 5. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. | | | Last edited: by Mark Harrison |
