I always open the movie in powerdvd in one window and have profiler next to it in another (except when credits are small, then I have to overlap to be able to read) and type the info in while pausing the dvd. Works great and saves paper/ink/lead. If a member of cast or crew isn't on your list already, add them. For bigger names you only have to type in a couple letters from first and last name and they will show on the narrowed list, making it that much quicker and easier.

But don't you hate it when the credits are in some font that's nearly illegible (is it an "I" or an "L"?) or it's faint lettering on a dark background or the source material is so bad that all the text is fuzzy or (and this is my favorite) there is a cut in the film so some of the credits are missing?

Yes I do.
In that situation I pop it in the dvdplayer and zoom in on my 32". Thankfully I've only had to do that once and can't recall which disc it was right now. Then it's a dance back and forth from TV to computer. I can see the TV from my computer desk, but not well enough for this purpose. When the house gets re-modeled I'll set up something better, I'm thinking 10 foot screen!

...The contribution rules are a good place to start (eg IMDB is verbotten) and do make most of this clear but can be a bit daunting at first....

I too just had a contribution denied because, "An invalid source, such as a third party database, was listed in the contribution notes."  I too had listed IMDb as one of three sources used to verify the credits (for roles on a TV show where no role was specified).  I had done so once in the past and was told you couldn't use IMDb.  Only reason I listed it with this contribution is because I swear I'd read some other recent contribution notes that mentioned it that got accepted.

As for the contribution rules, I don't see anywhere that specifically says IMDb or a third-party database is forbidden.  It does state not to use IMDb-style Roman numerals to distinguish between cast/crew members with the same name as another.  It also says, "If an actor is credited by name but does not have an associated role, you may use another source to identify the role."  Obviously another source can be almost anything (fan website, official website, supplemental material on a DVD, etc.), but if they don't want people using outside databases, I think they should specifically state that, and possibly list well-known ones (like IMDb) so people know not to use them (or solely use them).

As far as my submission, I'll be resubmitting it next week, minus the IMDb source, as I have some uncredited roles I need to add in to a couple episodes.

Just as an FYI, and you may or may not have already seen this, but people around here are VERY particular about documenting uncredited stuff.  Just giving you a head's up.

Quote:
The authoritative source for information submitted should be the DVD itself.  Please don't submit content from a third party database, and always verify the specifications printed on the cover.  In both cases, errors abound, so always verify the information directly from the DVD whenever possible.

It's there.

The first 3 sections of the rules titled "Introduction", "What to Contribute", "Before you Contribute" are just as important as the rest of the rules that go into the specifics.  As are the last 4 sections as well.  It seems most people skip these sections and jump right into the meat of the rules (I know because I did the same thing when I first started contributing  ) but they are definitely worth a reading over atleast once or three times.

You probably did. A few weeks ago, I contributed a profile for a movie from the 1930's (don't even remember which one it was), and the credits of that movie listed only the actors, not their roles. I then took those from IMDb and noted that in the contribution notes, and yes, it did get accepted...

To follow up on what midnit said ANY (uncredited) needs to be docmented by YOU and NOT by IMDb or ANY other source except the film. Hears a real strong suggestion....think time stamps.

Thanks for the hint on the timestamps and other info.  I'd noticed people using timestamps when adding uncredited cast, and was planning on doing so.  It's for the roles of two young children on the show (7th Heaven, this is for the Season 5 set) that become regulars.  They start getting credited about halfway through the season, but appear in several episodes before then.  I'll have to check back through previous seasons also when I get back home (out of town for work right now).

Oh, and regarding the first 3 and last 4 sections of the rules, I didn't skip them, but I briefly skimmed them, and missed the third-party database bit.  I'll make sure to read them all through before resubmitting the profile next week.

well I have been through the dvd credits and checked against what I originally submitted and well I dont see any problems with what I had submitted in respects to cast names and who they played, I only done this cause theres not a profile for the dvd in the database that I could find.  Any ideas to what next step could be to have it as a proper profile?

Just write how you got it in your note. You wrote that you have check the cast on the DVD credit in your post. Just wrote it like that in your contribution. This is the same thing with all the rest. Just be precise (more is better than less), check if your method are ok by the rules and submit.

Don't forget : the cast must be in the order of the end credit, the role must be exactly the same and the ortograph must be the same
