| Posted: | | | | I don't take sides in the format war and have game consoles that will play one or the other, but I did learn something new and felt like sharing.
I have a Sharp Aquos 37" (I am at work and don't recall the model) and I watch blu-ray with my PS3. I have the video go through HDMI and the audio out the optical to my receiver. No issues there. Its pretty looking and with 7.1 pretty sounding as well.
I go the PS3 for blu-ray, but decided I should also make use of its console function as well. I put in a game and the screen blinks and blinks and blinks. I grab and different game and the same thing.
After looking online for a solution, I find out that there is an issue with the HDCP (copy protection since Sony loves that stuff) and the hand shake between the TV and PS3 via HDMI. You can find more info if you google PS3 blinking.
I call Sharp about a firmware upgrade and they tell me I don't need one and gave me a long list of stuff to do which didn't work.
After playing around with the settings on the PS3, I found that I can get the games to work if I turn off DD and DTS sound before I play. Then I have to turn it on when I watch a movie. So even though it is set to push audio via optional, it still talks through the HDMI. Not too terribly difficult, but annoying.
Just thought I would share if anyone has the same issue. | | | Schultzy - http://www.michaelschultz.net grenactics - The art of skillfully fraggin one’s opponent with the use of grenades or other compact explosive devices that are thrown by hand or projected. |

Yeah, I just don't want to pay to get a component cable for the PS3. One thing that was suggested to me was to pass everything through HDMI (as I was using optical out for the audio) and then use the optical out from the TV (which I didnt realize it had). I am going to try that tonight. | | | Schultzy - http://www.michaelschultz.net grenactics - The art of skillfully fraggin one’s opponent with the use of grenades or other compact explosive devices that are thrown by hand or projected. |

I presume you are referring to 1080 vs 720. Answer YES, resoundingly. Have you ever had the ocassion to see a standard broadcast image against the SAME image in 720. But 4K is COMING.

I got my PS3 from my brother in exchange for some back rent money he owed me or I probably wouldn't own one. As for 1080p, I can't tell the difference between it and 1080i (which is as high as my TV goes), but between a DVD and blu-ray or HD DVD (got the xbox 360 addon for $125 which is less than my last DVD player) I most definitely can. Bottom line is the issue is caused by HDCP which I guess is what I deserve since when I was stationed in Korea I bought my fair share of bootleg DVDs (even though I replaced all the boots with legit - you hear that karma) | | | Schultzy - http://www.michaelschultz.net grenactics - The art of skillfully fraggin one’s opponent with the use of grenades or other compact explosive devices that are thrown by hand or projected. |

| Posted: | | | | Doens't BR playback work with component on PS3? In my experience, HDMI is a very fragile connection and often brings problems with it. If you have the option to use YUV connection, go for it. You can't spot the difference anyway. |

So in other words, other than having everything in one cable, HDMI doesn't offer a better picture than component because I thought it did. I am new to HDMI though. | | | Schultzy - http://www.michaelschultz.net grenactics - The art of skillfully fraggin one’s opponent with the use of grenades or other compact explosive devices that are thrown by hand or projected. |

| Posted: | | | | Depending on the lenght of the cable of course, you should be unable to see any differences (5-10m doesn't show any visible differences between HDMI and YUV on a 2,50m screen with a class 1 1080p projector). On a HDMI cable, you can already have connection problems at 10m, and I'm not talking about cheap cables!
There never was a need for HDMI (there is no difference between DVI and HDMI quality wise), but the implementation of copy protection (AACS). | | | Last edited: by Peter von Frosta |
