For example: as has been pointed out a long time ago, the "credited as" column doesn't even allow us to enter people credited as "art director" - only "supervising art directors" are allowed into DVD Profiler at this time.

Are you saying that someone shown as "Art Director" cannot be entered?  I don't recall this discussion.  If we were meant to only show "Supervising Art Directors," why is the field called "Art Director?"  I think the "credited as" data is meant to show that we can ALSO include "Supervising Art Director."  Otherwise, these credits make no sense at all.  Film credits seldom have "Supervising Art Director" credits but frequently have "Art Director" ones.

Have I been wrong all these years?

Once again: it's just a minor "bug" in the rules, one that has been pointed out a long, long time ago back on the Intervocative-forums. But to this day, Ken hasn't gotten around to fixing this. It doesn't matter - we all know what to do with art directors - but it really comes in handy to illustrate what can happen when you follow the data in the credits table too rigidly... I get a bit itchy when people forbid me to enter certain credits just because they're not in the "allowed" column, while all the while the entire community (myself included) does the exact same thing with art directors. Talk about double standards...

And some of us get a bit itchy because some users are always trying to poke holes in the rules or claim that Poll results are Rules. It's a two way street, Tim.

I still maintain the best way to solve ALL of these endless debates, re-debates and debate some more, is to go to <groan> open credits. As I much as they terrify me, that would solve these issues.

I would not like that UNLESS it was limited to specific 'departments'.  I have no interest in downloading profiles filled with gaffers, grips, accountants or any of the hundreds of other crew credits available.

I just ran into this doing the Star Trek Deep Space Nine Season 5 profiles.  In the middle of the season, one of the producers was promoted to Co-Executive Producer.

From that point on, he is left out of the credits (until he makes it to full blown Executive Producer).

Totally agree.  I don;t see why it could not be limited to the "departments" we already have with the addition of a couple more (costumes and one or two others).

Limiting it to those crew who are eligible for Academy Awards might be one way to go.

Trouble is some among us want to throw the baby out with the  bath water.  I'm not worried about the arcane crew roles such as gaffers, grips, honeywagon drivers, and the like, but I don't want someone to tell me I'm violating a rule by showing someone who is called "Art Director" in the end credits because only "Supervising Art Director" is shown in the table.  The ROLE is "Art Director" not "Supervising Art Director."  If the credits show John Smith as "Art Director" and Mary Doe as "Supervising Art Director" I believe both can be entered into the profile as "Art Director" - John Smith because that is the role by which he's credited and Mary Doe because the table shows it under "Credited As."  If Ken had intended to show only "Supervising Art Directors" that's the ROLE he would have included not "Art Director."

I don't disagree conceptually, Hal. However, Holywood being as capricious as it is, I fear we might run into issues in that regard as to exactly what comprises what department, where a straight up<erg> open listing ends all of those kinds of discussions.

What I've taken to doing in oddball situations like this where there's a credit that someone might find useful but doesn't quite follow the rules is to do the contribution making other changes but without including the problem credit, and then remarking upon it in the Contribution Notes, so that someone who's interested can add it to their local system.    Of course, in such situations I also make it clear I did NOT include that in the contribution uploaded to the database.  So far that seems to have been OK, but I can see where it could get out of hand.

I couldn't agree more.  If the profiler credit matches the film credit, even if it is not in the 'Credited As' section, I will include it.  To do otherwise just doesn't make much sense.
