Currently the genre Television seems to be used for both Television series and Made for TV movies. Personally I would much rather have a genre just for TV series. I don't think it's terribly relevant if a movie was made for television, for theatre distribution or direct-to-video. A movie is a movie is a movie. They can all be good, bad or bland.

Being able to separate DVDs containing movies and DVDs containing TV series, on the other hand, is something that I personally find useful. A movie I can watch in one sitting, but not a TV series.

It would be intersting the hear if anyone else feels like I do. I'm not advocating any change, I just want to  hear what others feel about the subject.

I neither agree nor disagree, Gunnar. I think it is purely a personal call. If a genre is Online and you don't want it...remove it (not from the Online, unless it is blatantly wrong).

I agree - however, it's easy enough to simply remove the genre of TV from the movies locally.

That's what I do. Very few of my genres match the online db - mainly as I disagree with other peoples interpretations.

I... on the other hand disagree. I think it is good and valuable information to know whether a movie is a theatrical movie or a made for TV movie. So I do definitely believe that the TV Genre is important for all TV releases.

Actually I think it is even more so important for TV Movies then it is for TV Series (and I think it is very important for series)... at least with TV Movies you are not stating the obvious.

Sorry, I read the Rules differently.

Quoting the Rules:
Quote:
Do not make contributions that only change or re-order Genres, unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect.

That sentence says: Do not make [A], unless [B], where [A] is  [contributions that only change or re-order Genres] and [B] is [the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect].

It does NOT say to never change the online db unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect.

I understand that's the interpretation of some users (maybe a majority, dunno), and I also understand why they want that (avoid possible ping-pong), but to be honest it's not what the Rules expressly say.

But that is exactly what it does say. You have just quoted that.

Do not make any changes to the genre list unless it is blatantly incorrect.

And I have changed lots of profiles so it matches what I want for the genre's. But of course have never contributed them.

No, the rules say we don't submit changes that only affect the genres unless they are blatantly incorrect.
Minor adjustments to the genres is perfectly allowed as long as it is part of a wider update.

The quote says "contributions that only change". If it's not the "only change", id est it's part of a wider update, as northbloke said, I gather that the Rules allow it.
Of course I could be wrong, but that's how I read that sentence.

Of course it's a personal call. I thought I made that clear. I was curious to know what everyones personal call is on the matter.

I don't think flagging TV series is "stating the obvious" if you use the genre for filtering. Just out of curiosity, why do you think it's important to know if a movie was made for TV? Is there a practical difference beyond the fact that TV movies don't usually have complete cast in the end credits?

In my opinion put TV genre on a TV series is stating the obvious... not that I would change it... as I said I feel it is important information. Just as I feel it is important information for a TV Movie as well...

If you look at 2 movie DVDs and 1 TV Series DVD.... it is obvious that the TV Series is a made for TV product... but it is not obvious that one of the 2 movies is a made for TV product. So it is giving us information that some people wouldn't automatically know. So that right there... in my opinion... is good reason for it. In my opinion it is good and accurate information that I feel is needed.

Personally I don't use it for TV movies because there is no difference between a movie that is released in the cinema or on TV/DVD/Video first, except for Academay Award rules about Oscars.

I see what you're getting at but whilst it is accurate information I can't see the point to it... it's like noting whether the credits roll up the screen or down... why would you ever need to know/filter on that sort of information?

... and FWIW I read the 'don't change genres' sentence as "no, you can't change the genres just because you're doing an update of something else unless there's a good reason to change them"

I agree with you (søta bror ) as i do not see that a dvd store(rental or regular) has a "made for tv movie" genere.
However they have started with "tv series" shelves some places.

If you go into a dvd shop on the net you will not be able to search up "made for tv movie"(atleast not for the most part) but many places has tv series as a serchable genere. However I do feel that the "made for tv movie"(s) should be able to stand out of the crowd as the good ones are fewer and further apart in comparison to made for cinema movies or tv series for that matter.
This is my personal take on the matter and I too change some generes in DVDP.
Question: Why is there not a pure HORROR genere? thats bloody strange in my book.

Hey I got an idea let's add a new genere:
The brand spanking new "UWE BOLL OR WORSE" genere!!!

uhhh I made funny joke

So seems that you don't see a practical use for it... well I use it all the time... I personally like to have all different types of movie marathons each weekend... and I choose a theme for each weekend. There has been several times that I had a weekend movie marathon of TV Movies. So that makes it useful information to have... especially since I tend to really like TV Movies from the 70's (as I have discovered)... I do not know all the movies that was made for TV back then (or now for that matter)... so this information is very useful to me. So like I said... it is accurate and useful information... at least in my opinion.

Just because you don't see information as being important to you... don't mean it isn't useful to other (not saying that is what you meant... just a general statement).

I feel like you on this: it is relevant information for me whether it is "telly" or not.
Pity that Genres data in the Online datatabase are not always reliable.
