An argument could be made for making the title "Das Boot: The Director's Cut" as I believe "Troy: The Director's Cut" has already been approved in the database.
What does the credit block on the back cover say? Does it say "Das Boot" or "Das Boot: The Director's Cut"?
It all depends on whether you can make a good enough case for classing the whole lot as the DVD title or not.

I would enter "The Director's Cut: Deluxe Presentation", as "Widescreen" is often redundant information.

Other than that, "The Director's Cut" is certainly not part of the title.

We've drifted away from the original topic of this thread, which was what to do if the edition title is too long.

Das Boot was the example I had at hand. I'm not trying to mount a campaign to have the disc title changed. As the screen title is Das Boot.

So, the question remains: If the Edition information is too long to fit in the edition field is there a STANDARDIZED way of abbreviating, leaving out certain words (Widescreen, Deluxe, etc.) or is a case by case thing where the individual chooses what they think looks best and then tries to convince the rest of the DVDP community that their way is best?

Because I'm sure everyone will agree.     

My next stop is the Feature Request Forum to suggest that the edition field be made longer.

No, you interpreted correctedly. I was specifically interested in what to do with Das Boot, but was hoping that there was a general format that was adhered to in a situation like this. But, you're right with almost a thousand DVD's in my collection this is the first time I encountered this problem, so it will be a case by case quest to get everyone to agree to the edition.

I found another one by the way while I was researching:

Troy: Director's Cut: Ultimate Collector's Edition

It is currently in the database as Troy: Director's Cut: Ultimate Collector's Ed.

And it's another Wolfgang Peterson film as well, that boy's just a troublemaker
