I always just turn on dvdshrink and see what numbers pop up when I open the disc. 100% = single layer, anytrhing less = dual.
Didn't know about that visual trick, has it been confirmed to be universal or could there be exceptions to it?
It used to be real easy in the early days of dvd. If the playing surface was gold, it was dual. If silver, single. Now you don't see as many gold ones and most DL are silver.

If I can't find the info on Google (i.e Name of movie+dvd+Dual layer).. I would look at the running times of the disc in question and by adding the movie run times and the extra featurettes etc.. if it is over 150 min it could be DL  .    ??
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

When I put a DVD into the computer, press Add Disc, then press Set sometimes my computer outlines the section Dual Layer. Is it possible that the computer is able to identify, and do so accurately, if a DVD is dual layer or not? Has anyone ever noticed this before?

Weird. I would guess the computer would know if it's DL as you can see how big the info file on the disc is in properties. How it knows to click the dual layer checkbox when entering is beyond me.

I should clarify a bit; it doesn't check the box. But, when it does occur, a dotted line encircles the words dual layer.

Might you be hitting the Tab key?  You will see the focus change from one field to the next, including circling the words "Dual Layer" if you do this.  I can tab between fields and see what you describe, i've don't recall seeing it after an Add Disc using the mouse.

It wouldn't be hard (said the guy not writing the code) for the program to check the disc size (or other parameters) and determine Single/Dual Layer.  If it's over 4.7 (something) GB it's dual layer by definition.  And when it's over 4.7GB it's usually well over so it's never a hard call.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

This occurs while I'm editing. I put the DVD in the computer; once I press the "Set" button and immediately after the computer id pops up, "Dual layer" will either become encircled with dotted lines, or not, depending on the movie. I even deleted the data and then tried again with the same results. I was also very careful not to hit any extra keys when I tried it and I tested it with several DVDs.

I know there are other ways to get this information but it would be great if this is an accurate and others can confirm so.

I wouldn't trust runtimes to tell. It might work on some discs (those 4 hour per side porns are obvilously DL  ) but I have some old discs with tons of stuff crammed onto a single layer.
If you have a dvd drive, that's the easiest way to tell just by opening up "my computer" and seeing how big the file on your drive is. If it's over 4.7 or 4.8G, it's dual no question. If you don't have a drive, try that barcode around the center ring trick (dual layer will have 2, singles 1). So far it's been 100% on discs I looked at (only a couple dozen, but it's that's not bad). Not all off them had numbers but they had what looked like the literal bars of barcodes. One eevn had them tagged "layer 1" and "layer 2".
