When submitting profile updates one category of change (like Cast, Crew, etc.) that can be individually selected is Box Set.

My question: is there a way to lock Box Set information to prevent updates from being downloaded if the master profile changes?

"Box Set" isn't in the list of sections that can be locked.  If it is covered by one of the existing sections its non-obvious ... to me.

The box set info is automatically locked/made private when you download the first time.

I believe it is even kept only, if you already have the child profiles locally, otherwise downloading the child profiles later will not automatically connect them to the parent.

Let me see if i follow that.  If there is an existing profile (TV Series anthology) and i want to add disc-level profiles (where none currently exist) people that already have the parent profile would not pick up the new box set information automatically.

They would have to
1) download the child profiles (obviously a separate step) and then
2) manually update their parent profile to link them?

Is my understanding anywhere close to right?

That is pretty much correct and I would not want it any other way.

Now that i know how it works it's fine by me also.  I just wasn't sure what the rules were.
