Collection number ranges would be how to handle this - kinda like I have my collection:

1-5999 <-> Movies
6000 - 7999 <-> TV Season Sets
8000+ <-> TV Season Disc Level Profiles

For your case (using your own ranges of course):
1-999 - Criterion Collection
1000+ - Other movies by purchase date.

Once you have all the profiles put into their respective ranges, you can then reassign the collection numbers based on purchase date.

I don't think he wants to mess with the collection numbers (for good reasons)

Depending on how important sorting all your titles alphabetically is to you you might want to try out this:

Use sort titles. There's two ways I can think of to do this

1) set sort titles to "Criterion 0001", "Criterion 0002" and so on

2) create a parent and and them all as children, then set their sort titles to "0001", "0002" and so on

That's a good idea....I have them on the shelf by number and it's always a pain trying to find the right one since I've got 200+ of them and they're double shelved.
