I did a collection renumber (by purchase date). I noticed that an old box set was now at the top. Sure enough, although the box set enrty had a purchase date, none of the individual titles in the box set had dates. So, I entered the date (3/29/06) for the individual members and saved them.
Voila! Now all 759 titles say "Error Loading Following Entry. Delete This Record?"
It appears that my total database is unavailable.
What in the world happened, and is there a way to recover?
My online version is current. I kept it current, figuring it could serve as a backup, if needed [but never thought it would be :-) ]. But now I wonder if I will lose the notes that I entered for some of the titles.
Thank you.

Don't take this personally, but I find it difficult to be sympathetic. It's so very simple to backup one's database and I fail to understand why so many fail to do so. | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

| Posted: | | | | I left everything default. Just uploaded.
I had been backing up regularly with 2.4, which I stopped using about 2 months ago. I did a backup and restore to go from 2.4 to 3.0, and changed machines at the same time. I cannot explain why I haven't done a backup since then. Just didn't.
Haven't tried repair, cause I didn't know if it would risk further damage, or if there was something else I should do first.
Thank you.

If the database is memory resident while the program is running, and only writes to disk when the program exits, perhaps I could kill the process, and my changes (and presumably the problem) would disappear????

I'm not sure you can copy it if the programs open. I had a problem yesterday where the program wouldn't respond and thought I should back up the database before I ended but Windows said various files were in use. I don't know if ending it is the same as exiting the program normally but the profiles I'd amended had been saved and appeared when I reopened it. As Skip has said you can download your collection as you have uploaded it. Ken has stated elsewhere that you no longer need to lock data for it to upload to your online. | | | IVS Registered: January 2, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | I tried to make a fresh backup, but, during the process, when it got to the profiles, it poped up an error message for each dvd. DVDP does not provide a way to cancel the backup once it starts, nor does it provide a "No to all" response. It also doesn't permit me to exit the program (once the backup starts). So I was faced with either sitting there and manually replying "NO" 759 times (once for each profile), or using task manager to kill DVDP.
I killed it.
Then restarted it and everything was OK-- just the way it was before I attempted to enter the missing dates for the individual components of a box set, except that now there were "9/9/9999" dates, instead of blank dates in the "Purchase Date" fields.
So, I first made a new backup (worked fine), then edited the dates again.
This time, I discovered more about what really happened. While entering one of the dates, I inadvertently entered the date in the "Purchased From", rather than the "Purchased On" field. When you do that, the next thing that pops up is a prompt to ask if you want to edit the retailers list. If you say "No", you immediately start getting error messages for every single profile. If you say "Yes", and then cancel out because there really is nothing to edit in the retailer list (because the entry was an error), you still immediately start getting error messages for every profile.
In other words, a domain error in data entry broke the system.
The bad data entry was my fault ("pilot error").
Anyway, now my database is fixed, (and freshly backed up).
