From what I understand Plasma and CRT are suseptable to burn-in.  Rear projection and LCD sets are supposed to be free from burn-in.  If you want more information, check this AVSForum thread about Burn-in.

ALL displays can be burned-in, it's just a question of how bad and how long it takes.

Yes it is burn-in.  Don't belive some-one that says CRT's can be burned-in but "rear projection" can't when a CRT is a type of display that can be used in projectors, monitors, etc and rear projection simply means a projector is mounted behind a screen and can be a CRT, LCD, DLP or any other type.

The easiest remedy is to put an image on the screen that is a close to pure white as possible and leave it up there a few hours or overnight.  Ideally if you can use your computer to generate a perfect white image and display it on the burned-in display that's what you should do. This, of course, requires either a VGA/DVI input on the display or a video output on your computer.

If you can't do this, let me know and I can burn you a DVD that loops a white image until you stop it.

It is technically called 'image persistence" on LCDs.  Unlike Plasma and CRTs it is usually not permanent.  The remedy is similar to burn-in for plasmas.  Follow rpmendez remedy, but you can learn more about it below.

Had this happen again tonight, and much worse than before, simply by leaving a game on pause for about 45 minutes. Running the white screen again.

I have a rear projection HDTV that has the 4:3 burn-in.  Should I do the white screen for the entire display or just where the side-bars are/4:3 screen?

I don't have the burn-in problem on my LCD as of now, but it's good to know it can be fixed! :D

Now if only there was something to fix a lazy pixel* on my DS 


I mean that it's a pixel stuck on a bluish tint. Doesn't bother me too much most of the time, but sometime this region of the image is a solid color and that stuck pixel is really annoying.

I had a friend call me up once and said that her CD player in her computer would play store-bought CD's but not burned CD's.  I told her to smack the right side of her computer once.

She did and then told me that it wouldn't play store-bought CD's OR burned CD's.  I told her to smack the left side of her computer twice.

She did and told me it now played both.

True story.  I figured the lens was just a wee bit out of alignment and just needed a tap.  Otherwise known as the Russian method of repair (beat it until it works).

Sounds like the beginning of it to me.  If I were you, I'd stretch your picture and forget about the slightly skewed proportions.  Your eyes will adjust to it by the way.

I read somewhere that most of the better games (within last couple of years at least) support widescreen mode.  Might want to check with the game maker to see if that can be done.

Since that post, I've had DirecTV...their HD-DVR has a setting that automatically stretches non-HD programming to fit the screen, while also NOT stretching the HD picture. Very handy feature.
