Adaptation Credit?

What are everyone's thoughts on the adaptation credit in regards to screenwriting/story.  I see it a lot in older films, particularly Hitchcock.  There is no listing in Invelos rules for it but I see it still entered in different forms.

Right now for example I'm looking at Stage Fright.  Screenplay credit is given to Whitfield Cook, Adaptation by Alma Reville, and based on a novel by Selwyn Jepson. 

In the database entry I'm looking at, Alma Reville is credited as "original material by," as is Jepson.  I don't think that's really correct.  Other places I've seen it entered as Screenwriter, but I'm not sure that's correct either.

Would Story By be the best fit?  One of the options listed on the credits page is Screen Story By, which seems pretty equivalent.  Or should it be left out altogether?

Which is the best option for this and similar Adaptation By credits?

The Writers Guild of America's screen credits manual has this definition:

"Adaptation by"
In the interest of avoiding a multiplicity of credits, the Guild is opposed to the general use of the "Adaptation by" credit. However, the Guild recognizes that there are certain unusual cases where credit is due a writer who shapes the direction of screenplay construction without qualifying for "Screenplay by" credit. In those special cases, and only as a result of arbitration, the "Adaptation by" credit may be used.

So the answer is omit the credit. Hope that helps.

Okay thank you.  I still think you could make a case for Screen Story by, but it does get into interpretation and probably just easier to omit since it's not stated as such in the rules.

I always include Adaptation/Adapted by credits locally but usually don't contribute them because they're controversial and if people don't want that data it's OK.  If there is an Adapted by credit and a Screenwriter credit I believe it should (generally) not be contributed.

However, there are instances where I believe some Adaptation/Adapted by credits are legitimate screenwriting credits and would have no objection to them being contributed if documented properly in the notes.

e.g.
The Jazz Singer
    A Photo-Dramatic Production of Samson Raphaelson's Play (OMB)
    Adaptation - Alfred A. Cohn (Screenwriter)

In Old Arizona
    Based on O. Henry's "The Caballero's Way" (OMB)
    Adaptation and Dialogue by Tom Barry (Screenwriter)

Bulldog Drummond
    Based on the International Stage Success by "Sapper" (OMB)
    Adapted for the Talking Screen by Sidney Howard (Screenwriter)

Ladies of Leisure
    Adapted from a David Belasco-Milton Herbert Gropper Stage Play (OMB)
    Adaptation and Dialogue - Jo Swerling (Screenwriter)

The African Queen
    Based on the Novel "The African Queen" by C.S. Forester (OMB)
    Adapted for the Screen by James Agee & John Huston (Screenwriter)

etc.

And again, that definition sounds like Screen Story By to me. (in fact, I don't really think I've ever seen an actual "Screen Story By" credit worded like that in a film).

I'm not arguing with you that it should absolutely be included, but again this is another of the many examples where some clarity or fine-tuning in the contribution rules could have helped a lot.  Despite my interpretation, as it's not stated in the rules I'm leaving it out.
