| Posted: | | | | I really don't get it, I have to constantly vote on some tiny detail that nothing really changes but people feel that it's not just enough that they have it in their own DB but also that they absolutely need to contribute it. It's not even a detail that is technically wrong but I've seen those, too (e.g. people replacing dashes with hyphens because they think it better matches the back cover). But this here isn't even part of the official overview, it's just something that is allowed by the rules and yet people feel the need to correct even that: I just don't get it... Slight correction: The contributor also made other changes. They also changed “ into " which is exactly the hyphen example I brought up above and doesn't improve the profile not a single tiny bit on any objective level. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | I agree we need to stop these useless changes to the online data base. The latest group of these changes, a certain user is making, is Apostrophes verses Single Quotation Marks, etc.... See the article in the article below: Typographic Tips: Apostrophes & Quotation Marks https://creativepro.com/typographic-tips-apostrophes-quotation-marks/Also, this particular user, does NOT clearly indicate what is being changed and why it is being changed. Please, vote no to these useless changes. | | | Last edited: by zappman |

| Posted: | | | | The issue of partial contributions has been addressed before and is in the collected statements by Ken and Gerri. I have no problems voting on contributions that contribute only a few changes. If the data is correct, it should be allowed. The problem I have with this particular contributor is that their documentation is not adequate. But, if the data is correct, I would rather vote "yes" and have the database include correct data. Gerri addressed this issue, I've included one of her quotes, and a link to where the forums discussed this issue: Statements: Quoting Gerri Cole: Quote: From an Invelos standpoint, there is nothing wrong with a partial contribution. Any accurate data is better than no data at all.
As someone said, it isn't a contest, so there is no need to worry about "inflating your numbers". Quoting Gerri Cole: Quote:

Quoted posts from Gerri on page 12. Here's one more, this one from Ken, that is relevant: Statement: Quoting Ken Cole: Quote: The Invelos evaluators' standing policy is to accept profiles that add significant value. They do not have to be complete, nor even completely accurate. If you're submitting 50 painstakingly correct cast entries but get the production year wrong, the profile should be accepted and corrected later.
"No" votes are equally valid in this case, however. They allow the contributor a chance to correct their submission if they choose, and save someone the effort of the correction later on.
I've sent out a notes reiterating this policy to the evaluators. Link to original thread: http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=345020&PageNum=1Post from Ken on page 2. | | | Last edited: by Kathy |

If the existing data in a profile is wrong and a person is submitting a change that actually makes the profile more accurate, and documents in the reason box, what is being changed and why, and the source of the data; then of course I vote Yes to the contribution. It is the useless changes, that are not made to correct bad data, but the ones that are just being made because someone thinks their way is better then some other contributors way. |

| Posted: | | | | Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable and appealing when displayed. Which glyph is correct: the inch, the acute, or the apostrophe? From: https://creativepro.com/typographic-tips-apostrophes-quotation-marks/Apostrophe: an apostrophe is correctly used above to form the possessive.Prime symbol, used above to incorrectly create the possessive. Acute accent, used above to incorrectly create the possessive. What are Quotation marks? From: https://www.ergonis.com/products/tips/punctuation-apostrophes-quotation-marks.php Quotation marks are a kind of punctuation marks, which always comes in pairs with an opening and a closing mark bracketing a chosen text or word. The aim of quotation marks is to emphasize different parts of a text, to signalize direct speech, dialogues or quotations, as well as to set off titles, phrases or just single words. Quotation marks are also called inverted commas, speech marks, or quotes.Quotation marks can be used in two styles; single (‘ ’ or ') or double (“ ” or "), and can also appear in two different typefaces; either as so called dumb or straight quotes (' or ") or as smart quotes (‘ ’ or “ ”). | | | Last edited: by zappman |

| Posted: | | | | I remember Ken addressing the apostrophe issue but I can not find his post.
Going through invelo's rules, Ken only uses Prime (straight) quotation marks, apostrophes etc. format. For example (under Original Title) the rule says the data should be entered as "... Original Title: There's Something About Mary."
I believe most contributions/changes were entered using the Prime glyph and the screeners accepted that data as correct.
Is it? Who knows. And, I doubt Ken will chime in and make a definitive answer. | | | Last edited: by Kathy |

| Posted: | | | | Typography is a fine art - for books!!
We are dealing here with a computer program with legacies back to ASCII/ANSI character sets!
Keeping that in mind the options are quite limited: Single qotes: " 0x22 ' 0x27 Closing quotation marks: ’ 0x92 ” 0x94
I personally prefer simple single or double quotes, but I don't vote against correct quotation marks neither. I vote against all sorts of accents instead of quotes. | | | Complete list of Common Names • A good point for starting with Headshots (and v11.1) |

| Posted: | | | | While really minor change contributions puzzle me, they not really bother me. I just don't bother to vote and move on to the next submission. What's more annoying in the original screenshot is when the summary is so vague that I can't get a sense of what's being changed; "changes made" doesn't tell the voter anything they don't already know, so the voters who might not care about minor changes have to click on Evaluate just to get any sense at all of what's being changed. |

--------------- This is text I typed into my Windows 10 Computer, using LibreOffice Writer. John’s house is green, Peter’s house is red, Sandy’s house. When typing in overview text I some times use LibreOffice and paste the text into DVD Profiler. Notice the names John’s, Peter’s and Sandy’s use an apostrophe. These were typed using the key you circled. There is nothing wrong if these appear in a profile, there is simply nothing that needs correcting. And yes this character ' is typed, when I press the key you circled in my web browser. Many times people copy overviews from the web, some of these overviews contain an apostrophe, that does not mean that there is something incorrect in the overview. Apostrophes can also be entered using the Windows Character Map tool as is this one ´. If this appears in a profile there is nothing that needs to be corrected. Please quote a written DVD profiler rule that says an Overview cannot contain an apostrophe. Link to the rules: http://www.invelos.com/dvdpro/contributions/Rules.aspx?display=overviewsandeastereggs The point I am trying to make, is there is no valid reason, to make changes to the 1000's of profiles that may contain a apostrophe in the overview. There is no bad data that needs to be corrected. | | | Last edited: by zappman |

| Posted: | | | | This example is not really suitable, except you wanted to show, that LibreOffice does not process the key strokes to the exact representation of the character shown on the keycap...
Wordprocessors do exactly that, they „process words“... | | | Complete list of Common Names • A good point for starting with Headshots (and v11.1) |
