| Posted: | | | | Agree Skip. So just in case he has nothing else to do I put all the questions from above into one post for Ken. Ken, Can you answer the following and help with some guidance please? Do the "Master Names" and or the "credited as" names upload with contributions? Can you tell us what happens with the names between the local database and the online database? Is the local system smart enough to know that H/B/C = H//BC for example? If not, could it be?Who will be the arbiter of what the "master name" should be? | | | Last edited: by lyonsden5 |

Skip You know this would be a lot easier for you to understand if you knew something about databases. | | | The Other DVD Forum Why do people who know the least know it the loudest? |

| Posted: | | | | Let me see if I can help out.
Let's take a good example, Courtney Cox Arquette.. (or however you spell it)
She would be listed in the first season of Friends as Courtney Cox because at that time, she wasnt married to David Arquette (or for the sake of this example lets assume thats the truth, I dont really keep up with these things). And she was listed in a movie that was produced last year as Courtney Cox Arquette (I dont know the name of a movie, so just go with me on this).
The functionality of the credited as feature will work as designed if the Credited As field contains the Exact Name that the actor was credited as in the movie. So in the case above, in Season 1 of Friends, Credited As would be Courtney Cox. And in the case above in Movie Produced Last Year, Credited As field would be Courtney Cox Arquette. For what the master name is, it is should be her original name, Courtney Cox.
If we use the Credited As field in this way, every where in the season 1 of Friends, you would see Courtney Cox. In the movie produced last year, you would see Courtney Cox Arquette. And if you clicked on her name in either cast listing, you would see both DVDs.
The credited as field is a way of creating an alias of sorts.
I dont know if this helps at all, and I definitely dont claim to have Ken's understanding of DVDs or the program, but I am hoping this helps at least a little. If it doesn't and you still have a question, post a specific question again and I will try to answer it and clear this up. I appreciate all your support. Ken is still working on the server, otherwise he would probably jump in and try to clear it up more quickly than I am doing. I know alot of you posted questions above, so fire away if they are still unanswered.

Still would like to know what gets uploaded to the server when you submit a profile, but it can wait. Thanks Gerri. You rock! |

Now if I could just figure out how to edit this information. Edit: Nevermind I figured it out. I like how it works but it is going to take a LOT of work to get all of these in to the system. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | So are these fields linked?....that is to say, when I click on Courtney Cox does it bring up all of the Courtney Cox Arquette listings, even if they don't include Courtney Cox as an alias? | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |

| Posted: | | | | No, they wont bring them up unless it is aliased.
I know that isnt a descriptive answer, let me try this...
In the cast edit window on the listing on the lefthand side, only Courtney Cox would be listed. Courtney Cox Arquette would show up on the right hand side in any DVD that you typed in Courtney Cox Arquette into the Credited As field. But Courtney Cox Arquette would not listed in the left hand side as a possible Cast Member. The "non-Master" name would not be listed there.
Does that help?

They are not linked...yet. I did a test in my collection that I have not uploaded yet. I have 'The Ultimate Scream Collection'. In Scream 1 and 2, she is credited as 'Courtney Cox'. In Scream 3, she is credited as 'Courtney Cox Arquette'. I had to remove her from Scream 3 and then re add her as 'Courtney Cox'. I entered 'Courtney Cox Arquette' in the 'as credited' field and saved. NOW when I click on 'Courtney Cox Arquette' in the Scream 3 cast list all the 'Courtney Cox' films show up. As I said, it is going to take some work to get all of these set up...but once they are, it seems like a nice system. That's what I've found as well. It'll take a lot of editing, but once we get it set up, it's a great system. Gerri, I have a question. You said that the "Master Name" should be the actor's original name...which brings up a question. Take an actor like Samuel L. Jackson, for instance. Hypothetically, let's assume he did a couple of movies early in his career where he went by "Sam Jackson". Since that was his original name, would that be the master name for him? That's the concern that Skip & Hal are bringing up, I believe. Personally, I think it's a small price to pay for a great linking system, but it is an issue that will need to be addressed. Just wanting to know if you know of an official stance on that. | | | "I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question: Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

| Posted: | | | | For right now, we dont have a hard and fast rule. I think what we have to do in these cases, is do what makes the most sense. From my perspective, since most people are going to recognize Samuel L Jackson vs Sam Jackson, so maybe we should use Samuel L Jackson.
We are open to suggestions about making some hard and fast rules about this if you have some ideas.
Oldest name, lowest number of letters, most commonly used in DVDP today, looks better on the screen, able to mix up the letters and make the most words with it, rhymes with cat...
