Hi Ross

Does the 'smudge' get worse the longer the TV has been on - ie when the screen gets warmer?

I can't say for sure, other than that it was noticably bad last night and had been on all day. The screen was indeed warm.

Chibul,

Haven't kept up with the times apparently. My displays at work do not have the degauss option and I held a magnet up near the screen. It had no affect. So none of my suggestions were helpful or applicable, sorry for that.

Tlevel mentioned an opposite problem Sony had with their TVs. So, perhaps a call to Westinghouse may be the best thing to do.

Found the following on another board by searching for LCD HDTV dark patches in Google

Quote:
Problem:- Light patches down the screen

Reason:- Heat !! What can happen is simply the screen is flexing if getting too hot thus distorting the LCD panel slightly, this might be due to the screws in the back being tighter on one side than the other and in hot weather the pastic case expands thus causing stesses on the panel..!

And LCD isn't supposed to have burn-in either.  This is kind of perplexing.  Have you tried this out on HTF or AVS Forums?  They have specialized TV display fora that may be able to give you higher quality help than we're able to manage.

Interesting. The screen did seem somewhat warm to the touch. So should I just loosen the screws?

I haven't had much luck getting help with anything at AVS, personally. I can try out HTF though.

They look very similar to dark markings that we had on the LCD screens at work. I'll ask at work tomorrow to see if they know what caused it.
I do know they never fixed it, they recently replaced the screens instead. Whether it was because they couldn't fix it or couldn't be bothered (the screens were getting replaced for another reason) I don't know.

Yeah, right! When we contacted the manufacturer about burn-in at work, we were told: it's not burn-in, LCDs don't have burn-in, this is image retension!

However, this doesn't look like burn-in, that's usually more defined than this.

LCD is not susceptible to burn-in.  That is something that happens to older and lower quality plasma TV's.  I asked the guys at work that deal with home theater and they said they have no idea and suggest you contact the manufacturer to see if it is an issue they are aware of.  Since you TV's more than a year old it is not likely under manufacturers warrantee.  If you have a secondary protection plan you might want to put it in effect.  Either way this is not normal wear and tear an may be a defect with your LCD Display.

I've just asked at work and it may not be a related issue after all.
The boffins here believe that their smudges was caused by an accumulation of dust that managed to find it's way between the screen and the diodes.
If it is the same problem (I don't know how old your screen is), unfortunately they say the only way to fix it is to remove the screen and clean it!

And that is what thay told me too.

Actually usually caused by overzealus wife using too much fluid when whiping it of.

My smudges got removed by a very VERY angry serviceman he actually gave my wife a good yelling.

Something like: "Godddam girl you have to understand that fluids and electronics must be used carefully NO YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO SPRAY DIRECTLY ON THE SCREEN WITH THE SOAP but at the spunge you use to whipe the screen". He continued to open the case and used a dirty old rag to whipe the screen and lcd panel and the screen was just as new. When he was done he opened the remote and started yelling at my wife somemore as there was actually drops of a spray soap inside it. I tought he was gonna expload and at the same time struggeling har not to get a fit and roll on the flor dying of laughter. My wife ofcourse got upset when he left. I laughed for two days on this thing. and if i ask the wife to get the screen cleaned i get a "if looks could kill" and quite harsly get the screencleaners place pointed out.

Would I try to to that myself? HELL No it must have been atleast 25 screws just to get the case of.And some more to get the protective screen away from the lcdpanel.

I've had it for about 14 months.

I have noticed today that the smudges aren't as noticable as a couple of days ago. Don't know what that's worth.

Still no luck yet diagnosing the problem.

Also, those who say LCD has no burn-in are simply wrong. Almost every time I play a video game now, I see remnants of the image in the screen afterwards. I usually have to turn my TV off for hours afterwards to get rid of it.

This entire process is beginning to frustate me. I love my HDTV, and I have a PS3 and HD-DVD player, as well as DirecTVHD, but this is beginning to be more trouble than it's worth, especially when nobody knows what's going on> Westinghouse had no clue, nobody's replied at AVS (typical), and the mods haven't eve n put my post up at HTF.
