I voted with the (ever growing) majority that only if they don't surround the complete title. Indeed, do we need a rule to patch up every loophole that might appear... | | | Martin Zuidervliet

| Posted: | | | | I guess that the same "spelling rules", so to speak, apply to the Title and to the Original Title. | | | -- Enry |

On topic, I think if you can verify that the quotes are part of the original title, then they'd be in the "title" field. If you can't verify that they're part of the title, they don't belong in the original title field either. | | | Last edited: by northbloke |

| Posted: | | | | IMO the same rule should apply to both fields, I do not see any benefit in recording them....
My vote - Do not include quotes if they surround the entire title | | | |

I do not think so, because the majority of the American people did not vote on him. He became elected by the Electoral College and not directly by the population. | | | Martin Zuidervliet

Is it a statement of fact that the quotation marks appear on the cover and/or the screen? Does the original Title field impact the Sort of data at all, in any way shape or form? Are we interested in accurate data or just some trumped up data created in someone's imagination?
I think that quotation marks including the entire Title and with no real "quotation" meaning are equivalent to graphics. As DVDP users, we use quotes to translate italics in Overviews, don't we? | | | -- Enry | | | Last edited: by White Pongo, Jr. |

That was my point, but it wasn't very clear (or funny) so I removed it... damn that quote button! |

However, let me ask some questions.
Is it a statement of fact that the quotation marks appear on the cover and/or the screen? Does the original Title field impact the Sort of data at all, in any way shape or form? Are we interested in accurate data or just some trumped up data created in someone's imagination?
It would seem to me that this would be a perfectly reasonable use of the Original Title field. It would present the title as it appears on the cover, you can't hide behind the Sort title any longer because the Original Title field affects NOTHING. And despite midnitoil's talk about hundreds of titles...so what...the data would be accurate would it not?
Given the author of this poll I think this simply another attempt to manipulate the databasre to a personal preference, he is not interested in the data and doesn't care that other users might find the data useful. Yet another case of making data available to ENTIRE community and what users choose to do with it locally is not of any concern of anyone but the user.
So, I was going to say that I don't understand the problem...but I DO ALL TOO WELL.

| Posted: | | | | Quoting skipnet50: Quote: Why should YOU say no to anyuser when you can no longer hide behind the SORT? I'll tell you why because you don't give a crap about what any other user wants. This all about (not you midnit) users who vocalize a lot but Contribute little else, they don't Contribute to the database, they don't write reports that we all can use, the don't write plug-ins or layoiuts, all they have the ability to do is blather on. Or as one will put it blah, blah, blah.
There is NO good reason to not include that data, oither than YOU don't want it. Wew aren't talking about all the graphics and font types and all the other stuff you are trying to drag into the discussion to set up a straw man argument. we are talking about quotations. Now try to give me something other than a straw man argument and that is not based upon simply that YOU don't want it. In other words stay on the topic ofg quote marks.
I am looking at the larger Community and know that there are other users who do want that data, that is clear. I have no personal opinion on it, but there is no logical reason not to allow it.

| Posted: | | | | The more I think about it, the less I care about this. I've got every title in my database locked down, so if folks want to take over the original title field as some sort of sour grapes prize, then so be it.
I assumed that the original title field was intended for genuinely significant differences in the title, not minor punctuation fluctuations. If the field use evolves to encompass these slight differences, it's not going to be any skin off of my back to accept or block as I see fit. Personally, all I think we're doing is moving the old argument to another field. I suppose Ken could just keep creating more and more fields until all the arguments go away, but that doesn't seem a particularly productive design method. |

| Posted: | | | | It's not midnitoil, but at the same time ew have to capture the correct data somewhere, because some users want it. Like you I have my reference database locked down, and have for years, nothing gets in or out of it, it is built to my specs. Unfortunately we have users who want to impose their will on everyone, they want the data pre-packaged in a form that is to their specs and they don't have to do anything to it, these people also do not Contribute anything of their own, and they don't want to have to edit their own data.
I have told this story before, two years ago, we had concluded that the Sound section would not work and it was removed from the beta. The majority of the rules team were very happy about that including myself. But two users weren't and howled, they wanted the data, what right did we have to tell them they couldn't have it, so we had them come up with a workable plan, so that the data could be usable, they did, the plan was not perfect but it works. Unfortunately we have far too many users that do not share my attitude towards such things.

Doesn't the poll result actually indicate that we don't need rules that spell out every detail and close every loophole for maliciously entering bad data? The voting on the contribution already takes care of this. Quoting hal9g: Quote: Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah..........
