Yes, I've read every post in this thread.  Where I would trust my eyes, you apparently do not trust yours as much and want a tool to tell you the aspect ratio.  That's OK of course, but I just believe it's unnecessary.  I have no objection to others doing whatever works for them.

What I'm not a big fan of are aspect ratios like 2.39:1 or 1.77:1 in the database when 2.40:1 and 1.78:1 are perfectly acceptable predefined alternatives.  If I were to use a tool rather than my eyes and found a film measures 2.39:1 I would enter it into my profile as 2.40:1 since that's the closest match on the list.  But YMMV.

Yes, on a computer monitor.  There are very thin black bars on the top and bottom of a 1.85:1 image when viewed on a 1920x1080 monitor.  There may be no discernable difference on a television because of overscan.

This is more difficult, and in such a case I would take the cover at its word unless I had good reason to do otherwise.  In a case such as yours where there is no specific ratio ascribed to a particular film I may make a measurement.

Screech ... Overscan? In the 21st century? Please tell me you don't allow overscan on your modern LCD TV (or OLED, Plasma)!
When my BD-player sends a 1920x1080 pixel picture to the TV and the TV doesn't show the pixels 1:1 I will set it on fire!
