| Posted: March 22, 2007 9:53 PM | | | | This is a list for everyone who may not have exposure to international films, but who are interested in expanding their horizons. List any and all that you feel are worthwhile along with their corresponding country. I will do my best ot keep the list of films/countries updated as the suggestions come in. I am going to start with a few countries, but, do not let that stop you if you wish to suggest a film from a country not yet listed. This is not intended to be a list of every film from every country, but instead a list of films that may be off users' radar and particularly outstanding. For example, there would be no need to include films like Seven Samurai or Mad Max on this list. In order to make this managable in the editing department, please post in the following format: Shinchin no samurai (Seven Samurai) -- Original Title followed by English title in parenthises. This way we can keep the list uniform without too much work on my part keeping the list updated As the list gets populated, I will begin to add blurbs on each film so you know if it is something you would be interested in. Please feel free to give any suggestions you have regarding this thread AustraliaRomper Stomper -- skinhead drama. early Russell Crowe The Dish -- Comedy focusing on a group of scientists manning a remote satellite dish The Proposition -- The middle brother must kill his older brother to save his younger one Undead -- meteors turn a town into undead; there are survivors of course BelgiumC'est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog) -- movie within a movie - camera crew follows serial killer Calvaire (The Ordeal) -- Along the same lines as Stephen King's Misery Aaltra -- Bickering farmers get more than they bargained for Crazy Love -- Deruddere film in which a 12 year old boy matures and learns the nuances of love Les Lèvres rouges (Daughters of Darkness) -- From Kumel: lesbian vampires. what more could you want? | Posted: March 22, 2007 10:15 PM | | | | I was just saying what a good idea this was in the other thread and here you are working on it already! Very good.
My favourite movie area is Korean at the moment. I said in the other thread we should offer themes and remake information as a guide, but these often defy such lazy comparisons!
OldBoy - definitive revenge film and utterly astonishing (Tartan Video, R2).
A Tale of Two Sisters - similar in feel to The Sixth Sense, but more powerful and adult (Tartan Video, R2).
Some - appears to be a straightforward glossy detective thriller, but with a supernatural theme (imported R3).
Infernal Affairs Trilogy - the leaner original inspired The Departed, but it's more Mann than Scorcese, and the trilogy makes for a rewarding, labyrinthine experience (Tartan Video, R2).
3-Iron - slow, but engrossing psychological, romantic drama. (imported R3).
Brotherhood - fantastic war movie. A fine companion to Saving Private Ryan or We Were Soldiers, and set in a war the West has little comprehension of (Hong Kong Legends, R2). | | | Jon "When Mister Safety Catch Is Not On, Mister Crossbow Is Not Your Friend."

| Posted: March 22, 2007 10:33 PM | | | | I forget some of you will see the UK as foreign! Couple of popular newbies, but more forgotten classics. Shaun of the Dead - like Zombies? Like laughing? Start here (R2). Dog Soldiers - gory B-movie, with one of the best scripts for years. Then try The Descent (more serious, more scary). (R2). The Third Man - the UK used to make quality Noir like this all the time (Criterion). Billy Liar - sixties fantasy drama; might appeal to fans of Amelie or Fight Club, with its surreal moments, but far more down to earth and real(Criterion). Hell Drivers - marvellous working class thriller about driving fully loaded quarry trucks rather quickly (R2). Late Night Shopping - simple low budget comedy about four friends united by working the late shift (R2). Alfie - diluted by the remake, this is an underrated, biting satire. Very un-PC (R2). The Man Who Would be King - Connery and Caine in a wonderful, epic adventure (R2). | | | Jon "When Mister Safety Catch Is Not On, Mister Crossbow Is Not Your Friend."

| Posted: March 22, 2007 11:36 PM | | | | Let me chime in with some European films: * Spoorloos (The Vanishing). The ending is truly horrifying* De Tweeling (Twin sisters). Fabulous World War II drama about two sisters who are separated when they were kids. One grows up in Germany, one grows up in Holland.* Van God los (Godforsaken!) Petty criminal grows up to be a cruel gangster. Based on a true story* Simon. Rough talking straight guy and a gay man become best of friends. After some time they stop seeing each other. A few years later they meet again, and the straight guy reveals he has cancer. I haven't seen this one, but apparently it's very good.3 Paul Verhoeven masterpieces: * Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange). Paul Verhoeven! War! Rutger Hauer! What more do you want?* Turks Fruit (Turkish Delight) Same as above, but substitute 'war' with 'sex' * Zwartboek (Black Book) Same as Soldaat van Oranje, but without Rutger Hauer. But it has the luvverly Carice van Houten, soooo...Belgium: * C'est arrivé pres de chez nous (Man bites dog). Camera crew follows a serial killer on his daily business. Hilarious!* Aaltra. Funny roadmovie about two bickering guys who become disabled after an accident with a combine harvester. They go to Finland to sue the manufacturer. For fans of Aki Kaurismäki (of the Leningrad Cowboys movie).* Calvaire (The Ordeal). Belgian singer gets lost in the woods. He meets an odd farmer who thinks he's his wife (?). Deliverance meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Not for the faint of heart.France: * Le fabuleux destin d'Amelie Poulain. If this film doesn't make you feel good, you have a heart of stone.Germany: * Das Leben des Anderen. Fantastic movie about the East German police state. Stasi-agent gets caught up in the life of a dissident writer. Won the 2007 Oscar for best non-english film. * Goodbye Lenin. Mother raises her family to be good socialists. Then she suffers a stroke and wakes up when the Berlin Wall has fallen. Suddenly Berlin is westernized. The kids try not to upset her fragile health and fake their lives as if the Socialists are still in control. What the heck, I'll add some Korean movies as well! * My sassy girl. I'm a staunch rom-com hater, but I liked this a LOT.* Memories of Murder. Based on true events. It's about a serial killer who never got caught.* When I Turned Nine. The steady life of a nine year old boy is suddenly turned upside down when a girl from the city is transferred to his class. Intensely cute film. | | | Last edited: March 22, 2007 11:47 PM by marcelb7 |
