Since we're having so much fun tonight, I thought I'd start a discussion on the "no" votes that have been submitted on the Star Wars title changes.

The recently revised Rule for Titles says, and I quote:

"Use the title from the front cover"

None of the DVD cover titles for the Star Wars movies, includes the word "Episode", so they have been removed.

Not surprisingly, numerous "no" votes have been cast.

One said "Episode is inferred. These are episodic films. Check the rear credit block. The Episode # is there."  I don't see in the Rules where you can use inferences to determine the title.  Can you please point that out to me 8Ball?  I also do not see any instructions to check the rear credit block in the Rules, except if there is a possessive in the title.  No possessives here.

Another said: "Pointless Change".  Well the point, since you apparently missed it, was to make the Title conform to the new Rules, Patsa.

A third said, "View the movie: "Episoe IV A new Hope" is how the scroll starts".  Well, that is what the old Rule told us to do, but no longer, Fingerlakes Dave.

Voting 'no" is a violation of the Rules based on the following quote directly from the Rules:

"If a user is following the Contribution Rules and his/her data is accurate, and the contribution replaces data which is inaccurate or violates these Contribution Rules, a "No" vote is considered an abuse of the voting privilege and should be avoided when possible."

Truth is I changed mine back to the old form of the titles when I got done contributing the corrected titles, but my personal preference for the titles has no place in the online database.

Ditto x 2.  I don't like it, but it is exactly what the rules call for.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

That's very interesting indeed since our friend 8Ball had a different take on the matter in the 'Interview with a Vampire' thread. In it he said:

Jesus H. "Jumping" Christ on a pogostick! "The Vampire Chronicles" is a subtitle folks. Possessives have nothing to bear on this title. Quit using a part of one rule to justify screwing up a perfectly good title!.

So in the Star Wars matter we can go to the credit block but for the Interview with the Vampire title we must use what is on the front cover....I see, that makes total sense.

So why did you change the titles in the first place? Do you just like to annoy people? While you are theoretically correct, I do not see the point in doing so.

Change is correct per rules. Vote neutral or yes.

This thread illustrates exactly what I think about rules. The more complicated and precise they are, the more inaccurate they will be, as we'll always find examples where their strict application doesn't match the reason for which they were made. And the more  precise they are, the more we have chances that the result doesn't match what most users want. When we'll have an online database which pleases strictly nobody, we'll have won...

Remember that about one hundred purists "play" with those rules and many thousands users would like just to find a "correct" profile online.

A proposal for a new rule system :

First contribution :
Rule one : No carbon copy of a third party database
Rule two : Profile must be normally completed (credits, overview and covers must be present)

People who contribute should use the spirit of the contribution guide (what is called "Rules" today)

Change in existing profile
Rule one : The change must be a significant improvement of the existing profile. The vote system insures that.
Yes means : yes, it is a significant improvement.  No means : no, it is not a significant improvement.
Majority wins...

No more, no less...

I'm one of those who had to vote yes (since this is as per the rules) but who thought this was an unnecessary change. It should have been left unless there was another change and then this could have been done as well.

I hope this won't be the start of a mass updating of dvd titles to change these to comply with the new submission guidelines.

We have already had confirmation that image submissions must be a significant improvement else they will not be accepted. I live in hope that the same attitude will be taken eventually with the main profile updates.

I voted yes since it technically follows the current rules, but there's nothing that says you can't post a vote comment voicing your disagreement.

I'll still be locking them down locally, like everything else.

Voted yes since it is as per rules... don't care if the title has episode or not so not sure if I will lock it or not. as for your comment about significant improvement... significant is very subjective... what is significant to one may not be significant to another... to me if any field is not as per rules and changed to per rules that is a significant change... size of contribution has nothing to do with it's significants.
