Hi,

I have around 340 DVDs and BlueRay. So far I arranged all of them in 4 categories and in those alphabetically.
But since I add each month a couple pf new Discs, I would like to know how you arrange your collection. For me, there is just too much movement to keep this system. As soon as one rack is full, I have to rearrange my whole collection.

Do you have a good system, do you sort them at all? What is your experience?

I just add new DVDs to my collection at the end, with only arranging alphabetically for each shelf. I keep track of the DVDs by using tags for each shelves. This way I know in which shelf to look and inside that it will be alphabetical.

Previously I sorted my collection completely alphabetically but with over 1000 DVDs it was a lot of rearranging work each time.

All alphabetically. You need to have enough shelf space to leave plenty of empty spaces ensuring you do not have to shift them around every time you add an extra DVD.

Alphabetically.  It's not too bad for me making room for new purchases, as they are all stored in multimedia cabinets with fairly slidy shelves.
They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care,
They pursued it with forks and hope.
They threatened it's life with a railway share,
They charmed it with smiles and soap

I have two numeric ranges, one from 1 to 999 and one from 1001 to ...

1 to 999 (currently 537) are my movies sorted alphabetically. 1001 to ... (currently 1172) are my TV shows sorted alphabetically.

So when you sort by number you have my movies first and then my TV shows and within each sorted alphabetically.

Alphabetically except for music DVDs which are on the end (oh, and one special set which won't fit on the shelf!).

I do however group stuff like all the Bond movies under 'B' (in release order)

My sort title in Profiler matches the way the shelves are laid out so one list reflects the other.

All alphabetically as well. In order to avoid having to re-arrange my collection every time I buy a disk, I put all new purchases on a separate shelf, and then do the sorting/re-arranging once in a while.

ok, thx so far - I got some ideas from your answers. I'm now trying to expand my shelf to allow me an easier sorting.

Maybe some have more ideas - but thanks for all who posted their way of sorting.

I sort (or actually don't) by purchase date. Whenever I buy new DVDs, they area added at the end of the list. I print a little label with their DVDP collection number on the spine for easy locating in the DVD shelf.
I alway use DVDP (or mobile) to scan my collection for movies I want to look...

I sort my collection this way:

I. Box-Sets/Series
- SciFi (e.g. Star Trek, Stargate, Farscape, Babylon etc.)
- HBO Series (Sopranos, Deadwood, SFU..)
- Mystery Series (Buffy, X-Files, Angel)
- Older Series (Columbo, A-Team, Starsky & Hutch, Magnum, TJ Hooker, Kojak)
- CSI (Mia, LA, NY), Navy CIS, ER, Without a Trace
- Various Box-Sets

II. Genres:
- War related
- Action
- Horror
- Kids
- Mystery/Comic
- Monumental Films
- Bollywood (please don't ask...)

III. Others
- Films I' cant allocate to a genre
- Films I should sort out
- Films from Magazines
- Duplicates

Well, I didn't find a perfect solution for sorting yet. I'm very often resorting my dvd's. Hopefully I'll find a n inspiration in this forum

Originally all mine were sorted alphabetically on the shelves with space for growth, but when I outgrew the shelves, with no room to add new ones and books and DVDs all over the place, I started filing into large capacity file folders leaving room for growth but now all that room is gone so now I just add to the end. (I still have a shelving space problem with my books!)
Everything is sorted alphabetically within the profiler and when I do file into the folders those are sorted so while it may look like a mess there is some order. I have a general idea where each disc is stored based on whether it is a movie or a series  - I spilt those initially. My collection number tells me exactly where to find the disc (folder number, page within the folder (each has 40 pages) and then slot number(there are 8 per page)). I currently have 8 folders, each holding 320 discs and 6 are full, with the 3rd series folder having around 70 slots left available and the 5th movies folder still relatively empty with only 7 pages being full.
This makes for one helluva lot of discs (around 2220 actual) and minimal storage space and still a little room for growth   - my wish list would unfortunately fill it and then some!
