| Posted: | | | | In light of the continuing argument over the use of the common name feature, and the fact that people are not providing proper documentation, and the lack of a proper source for such data, I want to go on record by requesting the following option in whatever method Ken comes up with for this feature(?):
I want the ability to turn off linking completely. I don't need it, and don't want to have to deal with it--at all! By that I mean, that with such a switch turned ON, no common name data is downloaded to me when I do weekly updates, and no common name data is uploaded BY me when I make a contribution.
There is no reason why this can't be built into the structure of this feature. A similar setup has been put into place with the Birth Year thing.
Now, I don't want to hear a lot of crap from those of you who want linking. That's fine, I get that you want it. I don't, and I know there are others out there who feel just as I do. So, if that's all you want to comment on, don't bother. | | | John

| Posted: | | | | The Birth Year thing, as you put it, has been implanted to make users aware of the fact they have to include a source in their contribution notes. It's a one way road and so paranoid users will still get approved updates. If you do not approve with a change you can skip an update or lock a profile. | | | Martin Zuidervliet

| Posted: | | | | You know how feature requests work. Someone makes a request and the community says if they think it's a good idea or not. Based on the communities reply Ken decides if it's something he should spend his time on. Telling us if we don't like it we "shouldn't bother" commenting goes against how the request forum works. I vote against this request. I would much rather see Ken continue to move forward with new features (hopefully some new online content and/or options will be coming soon). |

Focus should be on taking to the software forward, not on ways to hold it back - ways that are already there with partial contributions/acceptance. | | | Andy

That's no reason to be against it. There are a lot of features that people don't like or want to change. This is no different. And my comments were aimed at those who have gone out of their way to shout down anybody who voiced any opposition or dissatisfaction with common names and linking. Implementing a "feature" that ends up disenfranchising a lot of people isn't much of a feature. There are other ways to do linking, but the common name freaks have screamed bloody murder and nobody wants to have a discussion on the merits of doing it differently. If you think that refers to you, then I submit that YOU have assigned that meaning to yourself. I haven't named anyone in particular. | | | John

that would screw up everybody else's common name linking.. so I'll vote against this as well. If you want to hide the common name information then that's fine. | | | Paul |

As long as that was included.....who cares if Ken wants to do this. I'll be surprised if it happens, though. | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |

Focus should be on taking to the software forward, not on ways to hold it back - ways that are already there with partial contributions/acceptance. Why do you always have to take the negative road? And when are you going to actually READ what I said? Partial contributions don't keep me from having to accept common names. You damn well know that, so why are you trying to say otherwise? And since when does providing options for users on ANY feature become "holding Profiler back"? Always with the negative... | | | John

| Posted: | | | | for years we have told those who wanted their names linked too bad. You are free to do whatever you want locally but too bad. It meant if they wanted the name linked the could not download any updates period.
Now the shoe is on the other foot, but the answer is the same. If you don't want linked names, you don't have to use them. You just can't take advantage of what is online nor can you contribute, just like those who for years wanted their names to link couldn't do. It's your choice.
I still say if it's a matter of Ken spending time on it I would rather see him put that time elsewhere. |

| Posted: | | | | Because there is nothing set in stone as to what common name is "correct" it's doing nothing but holding things back. Instead of something that has been thought through and a clear decision as to unimpeachable sources, we have a free-for-all. You think that doesn't turn off people?
As it is, this common name nonsense (and birth years, etc) is doing nothing but screwing up the program as a whole. If this stuff is going to be tried, it should be as a beta, as to not mess up the database in it's entirety.
The way things stand now is the same as if you threw a basketful of $100 bills into a crowd. Mass hysteria and chaos.
The users should have the option to "opt out" of any feature they don't want, need, or feel is incredibly stupid. |

There is no reason why this can't be built into the structure of this feature. A similar setup has been put into place with the Birth Year thing. This might be workable if the feature only allowed you to d/l and u/l the 'credited as' portion of the name. Whether or not there is enoug demand for this is another issue completely. So, if that's all you want to comment on, don't bother. Really? Name 10. From what I remember, broken name linking was the biggest issue over at IVS. I can't recall a single person, other than you, who said they didn't want it. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. I also vote against this request... If everybody who doesn't like a feature asks something like that, the program will become a mess. | | | Images from movies |
