@GSyren: Have you checked one of those profiles in your collection? Because technically it IS impossible!

Utter nonsense. Are you blind or unwilling to accept the truth?

Took me all of 60 seconds, 54 to get the DVD, 5 waiting for the drive to spin up, 1 for reading.

Well, we could turn this around the circle several times:

I created a profile by Disc-ID - so Profile- and Disc-ID are identical ones from day one.

Some got a re-release with obviously new Disc-ID. So it is definitely wrong to change the ID IN the profile. The only chance to keep it correct would have been to create a new profile with the new ID!

The one and only chance that he sees the same Disc-ID a different way is a driver change

(see: )

But even in this case Profile-ID AND Disc-ID must technically be the same.

You can't built a Ferrari and update it with an engine from a Mercedes!

If you are still so totally sure that you are right (like always): Keep it! The Disc-ID can change for a EAN/UPC-Based profile, if it changes for an ID-based profile, then definitely a new profile has to be created! If you believe in yourself: Be happy! If you got doubts, ask the ones who teached you computer if you really could be right....

Questions for understanding, reflecting my ignorance: is it possible for a disc-id profile to have multiple discs, or disc(s) with side A / side B?

A disc-id profile is just a profile where the identifier is a disc-id instead of a UPC or EAN. It may contain whatever any other profile can contain (including child profiles). The disc-id for the disc(s) in the profile does not have to match the disc-id contained in the profile.

The statement above is what a disc-id profile can contain, not what it should contain. Just like any other profile, it is up to the person creating or updating the profile to ensure that that profile has been built according to the rules (if said profile is intended to be submitted). Unfortunately, sometimes incorrectly built profiles get contributed, approved and released.

Let us look at a possible scenario.

A box set is released with a UPC for the box, but none for the discs, so the discs are entered by disc ID and added to the box set as child profiles.  At some point after these profiles have been added to the database, someone buys the same box set (with the same UPC and cover art), but finds that the disc IDs for the discs are different.  What is he to do, create all new disc ID based profiles, and add them also as children to the parent profile? (After all, the parent profile is exactly the same in both cases except for the disc IDs of the discs.) That would make it look like the parent has twice as many discs as it really does.  Or does one determine that they may, in fact, add additional disc IDs to the existing disc profiles and keep the box set parent from looking like a bloated mess?

Anyway, that's one way I can imagine a disc ID based profile acquiring multiple disc IDs.

Thanks for those responses. I have been writing all my software with those assumptions. I wanted to make sure.

I guess it would be pretty rare for a multi-disc (not box set) release to be missing a UPC/EAN. That is the other scenario that is covered by the database technology, but maybe not seen often in practice.
